Quick overview of the Instacart Shopper platform

What can you expect from the platform? The information below should give you an idea of an Instacart Shopper's step-by-step daily work experience.

Plan ahead: To maximize earnings, you must plan ahead. The app allows you to check the daily peak earning times and schedule your work hours accordingly.

See store availability: When you “go online” in the app, you can view which stores are available. The stores will be highlighted in yellow, orange, or red to indicate how busy they are.

Choose your batch: When you’re close to a grocery store, you’ll see the available batches. Each batch will list the amount you earn, the number of items, and the expected tip. You can choose to either accept a batch or wait for another one.

Start shopping: Upon arriving at the store, tap “start shopping,” and the customer’s grocery list will appear. The app will describe the department or aisle in which the item is located. You can message customers to chat about preferences, substitutions, or out-of-stock items.

Pay for the items: You pay for the groceries using the payment card mailed to you when you first registered. You can also add it to your digital wallet for faster mobile payments.

Deliver the groceries: Use the app's navigation feature to complete the delivery. Once you’re done, you can cash out within two hours.

The Instacart program is available in many cities across Canada's ten provinces. You can find the participating grocery stores in your area by entering your postal code.

Full-service Shopper vs. in-store Shopper

There are two roles that you can choose from. Here’s what each of them entails.

Full-service Shopper

You’re both responsible for purchasing the groceries and delivering them to the customer. Being an independent contractor, you can shop at multiple stores and choose as many batches as you’d like. You can also cash out within two hours of completing a batch or receive weekly direct deposits. You’ll need a reliable car with auto insurance coverage to make your deliveries.

An important note: As of September 3, 2024 new legislation will take effect where full-service Instacart workers in BC will:

  • Earn a minimum hourly wage of $20.88
  • Receive coverage for job-related injuries through WorkSafeBC
  • Have a 35- to 45-cent minimum per-kilometre allowance to help workers cover their vehicle expenses

The legislation will come into effect in British Columbia and does not apply to in-store shoppers, as they don’t need a car to perform their tasks.

In-store Shopper

As an in-store shopper, you are an employee of one store location. You will have scheduled shifts and will work on a part-time basis (up to 29 hours per week). You’re only responsible for picking and purchasing the grocery orders. You do not need a car for this role.

Things to consider before you apply

Before you apply, here are some considerations that you should be aware of.

This role is ideal for personal shoppers and transportation drivers looking for flexible working hours. You can choose the in-store shopper option if you don’t own a car. Compared to food delivery or ridesharing platforms, you will be spending more time shopping for groceries and less time driving. This could possibly mean less wear and tear on your car.

When you’re shopping, you may struggle with locating certain items if you’re not familiar with the store layout. Also, communicating out-of-stock items with the customer may be stressful.

While walking around the store is a good form of physical activity, you will be required to lift heavy items (such as canned goods or water bottles), which can take a toll on your body. As such, it’s important to be mindful of your physical capabilities.

Just like other gig driving platforms, Instacart is also not immune to inconsistent demand and tips. Although, you may be able to earn larger tips during peak demand, such as the NFL Super Bowl or other major events.

Instacart offers a rewards system to its Instacart Shoppers. However, it may be challenging to maintain high ratings from customers. This is especially true if you have to deal with customer complaints. A lower rating can affect which orders you will have access to (since priority access is given to highly rated Instacart Shoppers).

How Instacart compares to Uber Eats and DoorDash

Instacart shoppers handle grocery shopping and delivery, which can be physically demanding. They also have more customer interaction for substitutions and deliveries. Furthermore, full-service shoppers will need a vehicle.

With Uber Eats and DoorDash, drivers focus on picking up and delivering food orders. This involves less physical activity and minimal customer interaction—but requires more driving time. They also have bike and scooter options.

All platforms provide flexible scheduling and instant cash-out options. Choosing between them will depend on whether you prefer grocery shopping or food delivery, as well as the type of vehicle you have.

How to become a successful Instacart Shopper

Here are a few tips on how Instacart shoppers can boost their earning potential.

Attention to detail, such as selecting quality produce, checking expiry dates, and adhering to customers’ preferences, will help to increase your rating.

Provide excellent customer service by showing compassion and going the extra mile.

Be efficient by familiarizing yourself with the store layout. Knowing where to find items is key to earning more money.

Plan ahead so you can work during peak earning times.

Be strategic about which batches you choose. You can calculate whether the earnings (based on the number of items, the shopping time, and the estimated travel time) are worth the effort. Some batches may include promotions where you can make extra earnings for heavy pay or during times of high demand.
